Teeth brushing question

Hi, ladies!

So lately I've been having a terrible time brushing my teeth, especially my back molars. I'm 17 weeks and have suddenly developed an incredibly sensitive gag reflex. Whenever I try to brush my back molars I end up coughing and heaving. Once it was so bad I actually did throw up in the sink. I've tried just avoiding my tongue, but it really doesn't seem to help much. Has anyone else had this problem? Short of not brushing my teeth for the next 20 or so weeks, is there anything I can do to make this easier on myself?

Hopefully that will pass!  I went thru like a month of it, ended up using a different toothpaste, not sure if that's what your problem is.  Maybe just go real lightly back in that area and slow.

Can you try just with water? Flavorless toothpaste?

You can just do your best and the gargle with mouthwash.

So obviously you need to brush your teeth for the next 20 weeks, however, my Dentist once told me that if I could only do 1, floss or brush, that flossing is more important. So maybe if the days your feeling extra gaggy, just try to make sure you floss back there? I know gagging doesn't have much to do with flavor, but maybe a flavored toothpaste like cinnamon or spearmint may make it a bit better?

Hopefully this will pass soon :)

It's the toothbrush that makes me gag, I'm not sure about you. I've also had to neglect my tongue but I got a pretty hardcore mouthwash that I've been using that hopefully makes up for it while my gag reflex is so heightened.

I'll be 20 weeks on Thursday and I've had quite a hard time brushing my teeth also. I gag all the time and get the watery eyes going and somehow manange to not throw up (even though I know if I just allowed myself I would probably heave) lol.

I just had my teeth cleaned and my dentist suggested brushing w/out toothpaste and then using a really good mouthwash. She told me that it's a lot easier for pregnant women to develop gingivitis and that I should at the very least make sure to use a good mouth wash. She gave me a thing of Crest pro health mouth wash and I've been trying to make sure I do that everyday along w/what brushing I can get done. Good luck! :)

Ugh-I can totally relate! I was throwing up EVERY time I brushed my teeth until last week.  Hang in there. I found if I walked around and tried not to think about it that helped. Also started brushing my teeth before I ate breakfast.

I have had this exact problem since week 6 and I am now on week 26! jaja

This will sound funny...literally...but it really works for me!!

When you are brushing your back molars breath heavily in and out of your mouth, like you are out of breath, especially the exhale.  For some reason it calms my ridiculously excited gag reflex.

Hope it works for you too!! :)

Thanks for all the tips, girls. Nice to know I'm not alone in this. Big Smile

Never thought about the toothpaste. I think it's more just the motion of the brush that sets it off, but I'll try it. The breathing sounds interesting too, I never thought of that one. Maybe I'll just stick to mouthwash and floss on days I'm feeling extra yucky.

Have you tried an electric toothbrush? Maybe it will help if the head is spinning so that the brush doesn't need to move as much.

I thought this was going to be about how bad your gums were bleeding when you brush. I spit out mouth fulls of blood when I brush..with both pregnancies.

I have had that a little. I would just do what you can, brush as well as you can. Maybe add a good mouthwash so you are getting extra cleaning?

That happened to me all through my first tri! It didn't bother me when I was preggers with DD, but with this one I held my breath while I brushed to attempt to stop it.

I've found that while brushing my tongue and back molars if I open my mouth really wide and say "aaahhh" (as in apple), it helps me not gag as much. Maybe it lowers my tongue or something, i don't know. Good luck! I hope you find something that worksSmile
