Feeding problems

My Dd will be a month old on Sunday. We went to the pedi on Monday she has just now reached her birthweight. I am BF was told for the second time that I was going to have to start supplementing because she was not gaining weight like she should. I did this for a week before it worked. At the next visit they told me to wean her off the supplementing so I did. Now I am having to do it again. I am so frustrated do not know what to do. I feel like I do not make enough milk to satisfy her but I hate to give up BFing because it is so good for her. I pumped tonight while DH gave her a bottle I only got an ounce. What should I do? I only want what is best for DD.

Maybe try exclusively pumping and giving breast milk by bottle? The more you pump and drink water, the more milk you'll make. Just a thought

Pumping really doesn't give you a realistic idea of how much your LO is getting, because they can get milk out a lot better than a pump can. That said, don't harp on yourself too hard for supplementing. If it is what's best for your daughter, then you gave it your all of BFing, and you can't blame yourself. But definitely continue giving her what you can of BM, even the smallest amount is better than nothing. I am sorry you are going through that, I had to supplement with DD1 and I cried and cried over it, but she is now 2 and healthy as anything, so as much as it hurts sometimes to know that DD2 gets all the health benefits of BM and DD1 missed out on it, I also know I gave it my all. I commend you for your strong spirit with it (:

OP, I feel for you. I've had to supplement with formula since day 5 of my son's life when he was readmitted to the hospital for jaundice and higher than normal weight loss. This was before we found out that I have breast hypoplasia (insufficient mammary glandular tissue in my breasts), and physical cannot make enough milk for my baby to thrive on alone. I was devastated...but with time, I've come to realize that a healthy baby boy who is gaining weight appropriately is the main point here.

Don't beat yourself up about this. In the meantime, just push the fluids as much as you can and keeping nursing/pumping along with the supplementing. Have you tried fenugreek to up your supply? Also I've heard blessed thistle, goats rue, and eating lots of oatmeal can help with this too. Hang in there, momma. You're doing the best you can, and that's what counts. What really matters is that your baby is happy and healthy...no matter if it's on BM or formula.

I would encourage you to meet with a qualified lactation consultant as soon as possible to discuss your concerns.  I think that's your best bet to get your questions answered as everyone's situation is different.  The best thing you can do is nurse as much as possible in the meantime.  GL!

Drink an entire bottle of water about 15 minutes before you pump.  See if that makes a difference.  Also, you might need to be eating more...
