Who should throw the shower?

My best friend is pregnant with her first baby and is extremely nervous, as is to be expected.  However, her mom and her don't get along well, is it too presumptuous for me to throw her a baby shower?

It isn't necessarily presumptuous. Offer the shower to your friend, and see what she says!

I think it is often a friemd who hosts not always a family member. I threw my bffs bridal shower and her baby shower because her family is just not involved like that.

My family goes with the old etiquette rule that moms and MILs do not host baby showers...not even sisters of the MTB...so my cousin hosted mine.  It is certainly appropriate for you to offer...especially since you are her best friend.  If you cannot swing it financially maybe ask another friend(s) or maybe if she has a sister you could ask her (depending on her age).

Maybe mention it to her mother that you would be interested in throwing a shower before going ahead?

Her and her mother do not get along.  I doubt I would involve her mother except to invite her to the shower.
