Will you continue your prenatal vitamins after birth?

I read that you should continue to take your prenatal vitamin after birth.  Does anyone know how long after and why?  I was assuming for BF benefits, not just to make sure you're getting all of your vitamins.  But I was thinking about switching to a regular multi-vitamin.  What do you plan on doing?

I plan to keep taking them as long as I'm breastfeeding and honestly, probably just keep taking them until we're done having kids.  They are really good for all women of childbearing age to take.

I'll keep taking them through breast feeding (so probably for about the next year for me) then I'll go back to a regular women's multivitamin.

I've always continued to take them as long as I'm bfing. I buy the generic prenatals at Target, so the cost is similar to a multivitamin.

My body reacts very poorly if I take iron when I don't need it. I've never been able to take true prenatals when TTC, just a regular MVI or folic acid supplement. Even during this pregnancy I couldn't tolerate the iron until 2nd and 3rd tri, when my iron levels were low. I'm doing great on the prenatals with the iron now, and I'll try to continue them through BF'ing, but we'll see how my body reacts. I'll just take a regular MVI if I react badly again.

I continue to take them mostly for the iron. You lose a lot of blood through the birth/post birth bleeding. And then it's just generally good to keep up on them, as 50% of pregnancies are unplanned. Wink Most doctors say all women of childbearing age should just take a prenatal all the time.

Yep, I'll take them because I'll be breast feeding and I'll need all the help I can get. :)

I continued until my big bottle was done, then went back to a regular multi vitamin, with an additional DHA pill on the side.

MH and I both normally take a multi and buy it buy the jumbo bottle, so it was just easier to switch back once my prenatal bottle was done.

It's definitly recomended to continue taking prenatals if your breast feeding. I think the benefit of those over a regular multi vitamin is the plant based DHA. They also have higher levels or certain vitamins and minerals that you will be passing along to LO as well as benefiting from yourself.

Totally. My hair was shiny and my nails thicker than ever! I didn't see such a difference when I started my women's multivitamin. Plus, I have only gotten one migraine since becoming pregnant (as opposed to monthly). Here's hoping the prenatals will keep those away.

I definitely will, there are many health benefits with doing so. Also, while breastfeeding my Dr will continue to prescribe them for me, so I'll get them for free. No reason not to continue to take them.

I am definitely going to continue taking them. They will def help with BFing, but also for all the hormonal changes that occur after pregnancy. Oh, yes. There are more hormonal changes coming, ladies!! And as tired and busy as you will be with a newborn, they can help you get the vits you need when you might not be eating as often or as well as you should be.

I just take prenatals all the time, even when not pregnant. It helps my skin, hair and nails, not to mention my immune system and overall health.

This.

The only thing my OB told me to do when I told her we wanted to start TTC was to make sure I took good vitamins with extra folic acid EVERY DAY starting three months BEFORE we planned to start. I did and well, needless to say we got pregnant 2 weeks after stopping birth control.

I plan on BF and having another LO soon, and having all the right nutrients in the early days before and right after conception is so beneficial.

It's for if you breast feed. I never stopped taking mine. I took it all throughout my first pregnancy, while I was breast feeding and carried on with it for  the 8 or so months in between until I got pregnant again. I will keep taking a prenatal vitamin until we are done having kids as I've heard it's good to take a vitamin with extra folic acid and a lower dose of vitamin a if there's a chance you may get pregnant.
