Maybe a stupid question about conception...

I have always had the most erratic periods, like I'm talking every 2-3 months I would get one. Therefore when I found out i was pregnant, I had NO idea when i conceived. It doesn't matter much, I am generally just wondering. I received my first ultrasound at 8 weeks 6 days and was given an EDD of March 13. According to a reverse conception chart, that measn I might have conceived on June 20th, but my last period was May 4th

I always measure right on time (which I know isn't too accurate) but my question is: if I have this baby before my EDD could that mean I conceived that much sooner? or not neccesarily?

It could mean that you conceived earlier, but I believe the early dating U/S's are supposed to be pretty accurate.

If you had an early u/s and have consistently measured along those same lines I'd say it's safe to assume they got your dating correct.

I don't think it's an "exact" science. By that I mean not every women is going to have their baby in exactly 40 weeks after conception. So if you have your baby before your EDD it doesn't necessarily mean you conceived any earlier, just could mean baby wanted to come earlier.

At almost 38 weeks, you're in the "term" window.  40 weeks is an average.  Delivering at 38 weeks or 41 weeks does not mean that the EDD was wrong, it was just when the baby and your body was ready.  I delivered my first at 37w1d, and I'm certain of the date of conception within a few days and it was confirmed with an early ultrasound  She was just early; my EDD was not wrong.

You could have ovulated later in this cycle than in history. Also sperm can live for 4-5 days in you after you have sex....so you can have sex say on Monday, ovulate on Friday, and conceive Friday. (This happened to me with my 2nd child and I only know because I was charting my periods to keep track of it all.)

This. The early scans are super accurate. Unless you are unsure about the father, a couple of days shouldn't make much of a difference. Most people can't pinpoint their conception.

Your EDD is based on ovulation, not LMP. Your period starts approximately 14 days after you ovulate. In your case, you did not ovulate until June 20th (or thereabouts). Your LMP date doesn't factor in because your cycles are so sporadic and you do not ovulate regularly. At least - that's my interpretation.

Hope that helps!

I have this issue also. When I found out I was pregnant it was a total shock to me, because I never really know when I'm ovulating. Plus I had just done treatment for ovarian cyst (3 mos of Birth Control) so double shocker. I just go with the OB's estimate of age based on size. I figure he does this for a living and knows what he's doing. I am right on time with all developmental milestones so far and AS confirmed the age OB decided.

I would say don't stress yourself about the stuff you can't control. Stay healthy, listen to your body. It will tell you when you are in labor!! Maybe be prepared a little early if you are worried.
