Those who are hypo-thyroid come in

I was recently diagnosed with a very underactive thyroid. I was relatively thin before my pregnancy 135 and 5'9".  I had a horrible time trying to lose weight after my baby was born.  I ate very heathy and worked out like mad.  I could not lose a pound.  My sister who also has an underactive thyroid has been on medication for about 3 years and has lost a great amount of weight since her thyroid has been regulated.

I am on Synthroid right now and have had my meds changed twice in the last 4 months.  My doc wants to see me every 6 weeks for blood work.  So my question is did you lose weight once your thyroid was regulated, or have you maintained the same weight and my sister just got lucky.  This has been so irritating doing everything to try and lose weight and not seeing much as a result.

If your thyroid is underactive then you are hypothyroid. I've been hypo for 8 years. I did not lose weight simply by going on thyroid meds. However, it does "even the playing field" a little so that your weight loss efforts (diet and exercise) will be more effective. Just know, it can take months for your thyroid to regulate - it's sort of slow moving.

I am also hypo thyroid but I haven't had weight issues just really bad hair loss  (thank God I had lots of hair:) but it's just really annoying and my doc said it can take months for it to stop falling out.  I am still bf'ing which I think helps with my weight loss.  But remember you just had a baby & if your thyroid is still low it can take a while for you body to readjust.

My throid is in a very normal range now but like my dr said it can take a while for the effects to return to normal (hair loss, etc).

One of the misconceptions about synthroid or other hypo-thyroid meds is that they are weight loss pills. So not the case. I've been on my meds for awhile and although they have regulated my thyroid, they don't help me lose any weight.  I really have to work at dieting and exercising to lose any weight and since the birth of my baby, it has been tough, real tough but keep at it.  It's harder for us but with hard work and determination, we can do it.  Also, always remember to take your pills and take them correctly, they should be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and you should avoid eating for an hours after taken.  If you do eat, wait three hours to take pills.  Hope this helps.

I just wanted to tell you that you aren't alone.  After having DS I had a hyper thyroid.  I had to quit BF because I lost so much weight (down to 90 pounds) and I had the radioactive iodine treatment.  After the RAI, I went to having hypothryroidism.  I gained 22 pounds in 3 months by eating like I always have.  Then I had to start taking Synthroid and I've lost almost everything that I've gained without diet and exercise.  I'm having to go every six weeks too and this has been going on for 5 months.  My levels still aren't right.  At first they were 117 and now after a dose of 75 my levels are at 11.  They upped my meds to 100 and now I feel hyper again.  I wish I had just quit breastfeeding and waited to see if my body would return to normal.  Here we are with our DC nearing a year old and our bodies are still acting stupid.  But, yes, to answer your question, I did lose a lot of the weight I had gained when I started the meds which is unfortunate for me since I need the extra weight.

I've always been really thin even when I was hypo and unmedicated.  However, I did gain some weight when I was hypo.  It was a small amount to most people, but since I'm on the low end of weight it was a lot for me.   I gained about 5-7% of my body weight.  And before I started having hypo symptoms I had been at the same weight no matter what.  So it was a little odd to gain anything for me.

After I got on medication and got at a right dose, I did eventually drop the weight.  I really don't know how long though.  But I pretty much always maintain that same weight, except while pregnant of course. I was a few pounds heavier for a while post partum, but around 5 months I was back down to that same weight.

I was just recently diagnosed with hypo.  I haven't gone back yet for my follow-up bloodwork, so I don't know yet if my levels have regulated or if I need a different dose.  I was a little overweight pre-pg, but easily lost all of my pg weight.  Since starting my meds, I have lost 3 lb.  So I'm less than my pre-pg weight, but by no means thin and need to lose more.  My Dr. made sure I understood that the medication would not necessarily make me lose weight, but should make it easier for me to lose weight on my own with diet and exercise.  But it can take awhile for your body to adjust and get the right dosage, and BF'ing can make that harder.
