You can start by doing a diaper trial from Jilliansdrawers.com. They send you a few different styles, all with washing instructions, and you send back any (or all) of what you don't want. I got started that way. I started out with the popular BG 3.0s to ease into it, then went from there.

Just peruse any post relating to CDs and you'll learn so much. I would seriously know nothing if not for this board :)

You can get prefolds and covers for less than $200 total investment.  There are other options that will be more expensive.  I think $200-$500 is the average cost for a total stash of diapers, new.  (You can get used ones cheaper if you want.)

Most people have a combination of different kinds.  We have 24 prefolds and 3 covers that we use most of the time, but we also have 4 pocket diapers (FuzziBunz, BumGenius3.0) that we use for overnight or when we have sitters, since they are less intimidating to most people.

I would recommend looking at some sales sites like www.cottonbabies.com, www.greenmountain.com, to get an idea of what's out there.  That will probably prompt a ton more questions, so come back and ask away!

The laundry is not hard at all.  I wash 2-3 times a week.  I hate doing laundry too but I love washing and folding my CDs.

Yay! And welcome :)

Ok, there's TONS of info out there. Maybe check out some basic info at MrsDonkey's blog (here and here). Modern Diapers and Pinstripes & Polkadots also have some good info (here and here).

Pros: Super easy, super cute, saving tons of money and NOT putting all those diapers in landfill. Also, better for baby's bum, fewer diaper rashes. Fewer leaks/blowouts (if any)

Cons: They're a bit more work, I guess. But honestly, I don't see it as a huge deal and I still consider them super easy. I really don't personally see any cons. Except maybe I don't have enough money to buy every cute diaper out there ;)

Our laundry routine is this: cold pre-rinse with detergent (this gets rid of the ickies), hot wash. Some do an extra rinse at the end. I don't. Throw in the dryer or line dry; it's up to you. You will need a CD safe detergent. We use Crunchy Clean and think it's the bomb diggity ;) And one of our own nesties makes it :)

Pros: Way cheaper than using disposables, more eco friendly, no chemical gel up against dc's skin, far more breathable than disposables, little to no diaper rash, contains poop waaaaaay better than disposables (no more blowouts), I have far far less leaks than I did in disposables, they're stinking cute.

Cons: They do add some time to your diaper change routine (this has never bothered me in the slightest though), people are always saying "You cloth diaper?!" Honestly, that's it.

Costs: This varies greatly. There are tons of different options out there but you can go way inexpensively with simle prefolds and covers and spend maybe a hundred bucks for a stash (couple hundred over the different sizes total) or you can spend 20-30 a diaper for fancier styles. BUT those styles are often one size through the diapering life of your child so you still will probably only spend between 450-550 total compared to estimates of 2500-3000 a child using disposables. Cloth can be used for dc #2 and 3 and then it's free to diaper them. Plus many cd's can be resold. Try doing that with a disposable.

Laundry isn't bad at all. I hate laundry too but cd's aren't bad because there's not a whole lot of folding involved (which I find to be the worst part of laundry). I have a 2 day stash (working on getting it up to 3 days) so I do an extra 3 partially full loads a week. I throw everything in right from the pail do an initial cold rinse to wash away the bulk of stuff. Then a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with a cd safe detergent. Dry. Done. My husband is a utility nazi and we haven't noticed any noticable difference in our bills since starting to cd when ds was 7 months old.

HTH!

I put them in the wash as is. I do NOT scrub or swish or dunk in the toilet Ick! Solid poo of course needs to go in the toilet. But that's it and you get used to it very quickly. Not a big deal really.

OH! I forgot to mention the trial at Jillian's Drawers. Here is the link. We did it and it's a great way to try a few different kinds of diapers without too much upfront cost.

Oh - and to dispel some cloth diapering myths. There's no more nasty soaking in wet pails or swishing in toilets or any other crazy routines. When they're real young the diapers go as is right in the pail and then as is right in the laundry and ebf poop will rinse away in that first rinse cycle. Once they start solids you do have to toilet the poop but we keep a plastic knife under the bathroom sink, give it a scrape or two into the toilet and the rest goes in the pail. Some people buy flushable liners so that they just shake the liner and poop into the toilet and even skip having to scrape. There's really very little to it.

Since your DS is on solids, you will want to shake off his solid poo into the toilet first.  (They actually make flushable liners that we are using right now until DS' poo forms up a bit.  That way we don't have to scrape the poo off or anything.  Just peel off the liner and plop it in the toilet.)

Anyway, then throw the diaper in your normal diaper pail.  We use a trashcan lined with an old pillowcase.  On laundry day, we dump the pillowcase and all in the washing machine.  I run a rinse first, then hot wash, with an extra cold rinse at the end.

There are some detergents that are better for CD's than others.  (Mainly, you want to use Free and Clear-type detergents.  We use Purex F&C.)

There may be a diaper service in your area.  You could buy and wash just the cute covers and they take care of the rest!

No, we have ZERO smell issues and we don't use any kind of pail fresheners either.

We change about the same, but I always changed often anyway. Not b/c they're not absorbant enough, but b/c I figure a nice clean diaper is always better than one she's been sitting in for a few hours :)

You may have to play around to find a good nighttime diaper combination.  But you CAN easily use CDs at night. We typically use a pocket diaper (Blueberries, Haute Pockets, BGs, KCKs) with either 3 microfiber inserts or hemp and mf. Hemp seems to be the magic ingredient for nighttime for many! Super absorbant and not so bulky.

I would DEFINITELY say the blowouts/leaks will get better, if not stop altogether. DD has had one poo leak since we switched to cloth and that was over 3 months ago. She blew out constantly in sposies (as in daily, usually).

It smells BETTER than with disposables. The urine reacts with the chemicals in the disposables and makes them smell worse. Plus most of your poop goes in the toilet so there's less in the room to even smell. DS's room doesn't smell at all anymore and he disposables used to be in plastic in the pail and now they just hang out in an old pillowcase in there.

I do change him more often then with disposables but not that bad. I changed probably every 2-4 hours in disposables and every 2-3 hours in cloth.

Overnight he does fine. Once they sleep through the night you might have to play with what works for you but many people find that a pocket diaper double stuffed (usually with at least one hemp insert) works great. Now that I found what works I never have overnight leaks - occassional damp waistbands but nothing like the flooded sheets I used to have with disposables.

You will have no poo leakage with cloth - I can practically guarantee this to you. I had more poop issues with disposables than I can count (including the almight pampers swaddlers) and I haven't had a single poop incident in the 9 months that we've been using cd's. Not one.

My understanding is that the pail doesn't smell as long as you're sure to do your CD laundry regularly.  I don't know about the changing (I'm not a mom yet), but there are lots of options and things you can try for overnight until you find what works.  And from what I hear, the poopsplosions that you speak of may disappear completely with CD. :-)

Ditto on the Jillian's Drawers trial.

http://jilliansdrawers.com/cdcm.html

I started with BG AIO's for day and 3.0's for night. They are really easy to use. I do laundry every otherday or every third day. It really isn't that bad.

After I got use to them I ventured out to other types. Here is a list of all the diapers I tried and loved:

BG AIO - http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=210

These are SO easy to use. They are very trim fitting. Great for husbands and IL's!

BG OS 3.0 - http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=91

These are also easy. You do have to stuff them. Great for overnight because you can adjust the absorbancy.

Organic BG OS AIO - http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=91

These are easy. We did use them for overnight until DD hit 5 months. They are also trim.

KCK One - http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6056477 or http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5705711

These are the best pocket diapers IMO. You can get them custom. They are trim. Great for overnight.

Goodmama's - http://www.thegoodmama.com/

SUPER absorbant fitted. My DD can go up to 2.5-3 hours without a cover. We use one overnight under a KCK Cover or a Stacinator So Simple Cover. A little bulky. Silky. Cute prints.

KCK Cover - http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5705711

Cute custom prints. Works well for day or night. OS.

Stacinator So Simple Diaper Cover - http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=164

These look a little funny but they work really well. I just got mine in a couple days ago. They look very comfy. Works well overnight. Doesn't leave ANY red marks around legs or tummy.

Stacinator Fleece Cover - http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=323

I haven't used it for night yet, but I have heard that it works great. Great breathable alternative to PUL covers. Easy to care for.

Blueberry OS - http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=332

These are great OS diapers. I like the one with the snaps. I also have minky ones but they are a little bulky. Great for overnight.

Aristocrat Wool Soaker - http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=67

Great natural and breathable cover for night (or day).

BuBu Bebe OS Fitted - http://hyenacart.com/BubuBebe/index.php?c=17

I just ordered one of these so I haven't recieved it yet. I hear they are very comparable to Goodmama's.. maybe better!

Sorry it's so long!

What do you do with them when you're out?

What do your dcps or sitters think? Right now ds is at a sitter's usually 5 days/week (minus holidays and snow days).

When you're out, most people use a wetbag. Here's what mine looks like (same brand anyway). It's just a small, usually zippered waterproof bag that you can keep in your diaper bag. There are several different sizes depending on what you need. You wash it with your diapers just like your pail liner.

For sitters, I would probably get either pockets (and have them stuffed already) or AIOs (all-in-ones). No stuffing required, no cover needed. Very easy and most go on just like a sposie, with either velcro or snaps.
