Baby Bjorn and hip problems? Really?

I keep reading from posters that the Baby Bjorn causes hip problems, but I can't find any actual documentation of this anywhere.  It almost seems as though it's become urban legend.  Even my friend who is an orthopedist and used the Bjorn herself says the info is not accurate. She says the Bjorn is not good if the baby already has hip dysplasia, but it doesn't acutally cause it. My pedi also said not to worry.  I've googled it, but all I find are message boards or blogs that say the Bjorn is bad...... and then they almost ALL recommend the Ergo, which I find rather interesting.

Does anyone know of any actual medical data?

I've been wondering this myself.  Looking at a baby's positioning in the Bjorn and say, the Moby, I don't see a difference.

Eh.  My DS loves his Bjorn.  As with everything, it is fine in moderation(per my pedi)!  If you left your child in the Bjorn for hours every day (just like in a jumperoo or exersaucer) there would be problems...

I guess my opinion on the whole thing is that if they were really causing health problems, they would recall them or take them off the market. I'll probably be called ignorant for that, but that's what I'm going for...:)

Oh, and I agree with pp: If I'm not using it all day, every day, I don't see an issue with it.

My understanding is that it's not necessarily hip problems, but spine problems. Here's an article that addresses it. Carriers like the Ergo put the baby in more of a sitting position, which distributes the baby's weight more evenly rather than concentrating all the weight on the spine.

Personally, I asked my pedi about Bjorns and she recommended against them for the reasons I mentioned above.

As anything, it's totally up to your discretion.

I agree it's more about having the baby in a sitting position, rather than directly on their spine.  That said, my DD does have hip dysplasia and her orthopedist actually recommended the Bjorn if we're going to wear her because it keeps her legs in the position that her harness already holds her legs in.  Obviously not for long periods of time, but I tend to think it's ok on their hips.  I don't have any medical evidence though other than what the orthopedist has said.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think it's all bunk too. I couldn't find any valid information about the Bjorn being bad for baby.

I find the bjorn to be very uncomfortable on my back so that's my biggest beef with it. Maybe it won't cause long term harm but having a baby who can't hold its head up sitting upright and dangling my its crotch doesn't seem like a good carry position. I'll stick to my moby and Mei tai

Well, they do say on the box to not use it for longer than 20 minutes. I'm assuming there is a reason for that. I believe the issue comes when people use them as a long range carrier.

I wonder how many people actually abide by that warning though. My guess is not very many. People will take their lo's out for an entire afternoon in one.

I agree, thats the problem.
